In recent years, Porcelain Paving has surged in popularity, outshining traditional natural sandstone and limestone. Homeowners are increasingly seeking low-maintenance gardens that evoke the feel of a holiday retreat—a perfect ‘staycation’ space. Unlike sandstone or limestone, porcelain requires minimal upkeep: it doesn’t need sealing and is highly resistant to staining thanks to its non-porous surface, which prevents dirt and grime from being absorbed. Porcelain Paving also retains its original colour longer. Manufactured in a controlled environment, each slab has unique colours and patterns printed during production, ensuring they won’t fade in the sun like natural stone can. Its advanced manufacturing process creates a strong, durable, and reliable paving stone. Fired at temperatures up to 1400°C, then rectified and vitrified for precise dimensions and consistent thickness, porcelain paving is built to stand the test of time in any garden. Both Porcelain and Sandstone paving bring unique qualities to outdoor spaces, catering to different styles and functional needs. Porcelain Paving is a manufactured material designed to mimic natural stone while offering enhanced durability. Produced through vitrification, high-quality clays and minerals, including quartz, are fired at 1200°C, creating a dense, low-absorption surface often described as “glass-like.” Vitrified porcelain is non-porous, waterproof, and highly resistant to mould, moss, and frost. With an R11 skid rating, it’s a safe choice for pool areas or spaces where children play. Porcelain is also low-maintenance, retaining its vivid colour and smooth finish for years without sealing. Sandstone, in contrast, is a naturally formed stone, often quarried in India. Its porous nature allows water to pass through, supporting rainwater absorption and providing environmental benefits like reducing surface runoff. Over time, sandstone’s colours naturally fade, developing a weathered, classic look. To maintain its vibrancy and protect against staining, regular sealing is recommended. Ultimately, the choice comes down to priorities: Porcelain excels in durability and minimal upkeep, while Sandstone offers natural charm, environmental benefits, and a timeless, aged aesthetic. 1. Plan and Design Measure the Area: Accurately measure your space, accounting for any patterns, borders, or design features. Select Your Pavers: Choose porcelain pavers that meet your aesthetic and practical needs, considering colour, size, and thickness. 2. Prepare the Site Mark the Layout: Use stakes and string to outline your design, keeping lines straight and corners precise. Excavate the Ground: Dig 150–200mm (6–8 inches) to allow space for the sub-base, bedding layer, and pavers. Ensure a slight slope away from structures for drainage. 3. Create a Stable Sub-Base Lay the Sub-Base: Spread 100–150mm (4–6 inches) of MOT Type 1 crushed stone or hardcore evenly over the area. Compact the Sub-Base: Use a plate compactor to create a firm, level foundation that minimizes future movement. 4. Prepare the Bedding Layer Mix Mortar: Combine sharp sand and cement in a 4:1 ratio to create a semi-dry mortar. Apply Mortar: Spread a 30mm (1–1.5 inches) layer over the compacted sub-base, following the slope for effective drainage. 5. Prime the Porcelain Pavers Apply Slurry Primer: Coat the back of each paver with a slurry primer (e.g., UltraScape Primer) to ensure strong adhesion to the mortar bed. 6. Lay the Porcelain Pavers Position Pavers: Start from one corner, pressing each firmly into the mortar. Use Spacers: Maintain a 3–5mm gap between pavers for jointing. Level Each Paver: Use a spirit level to check alignment, adjusting with a rubber mallet as needed. 7. Cutting Pavers (If Required) Cut with Precision: Use a wet tile saw with a diamond blade for clean cuts. Always wear safety goggles and gloves. 8. Jointing the Paving Fill the Joints: Once the mortar sets (usually 24 hours), fill gaps with a jointing compound like EASYJoint. Activate if Needed: Follow manufacturer instructions to fully secure the joints. 9. Final Finishing Clean the Surface: Remove excess jointing compound with a soft brush and water. Allow to Set: Let the paving cure for 24–48 hours before foot traffic or placing heavy furniture. 10. Optional Sealing Seal the Joints: Although porcelain is non-porous, sealing the joints adds extra protection against stains. Ensure the jointing compound is fully cured before applying any sealant. Maintenance Tips Routine Cleaning: Sweep regularly and occasionally rinse with a hose or pressure washer. Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Use mild detergents and avoid abrasive products to preserve the appearance and integrity of the pavers and joints. Following these steps will ensure a long-lasting, beautiful porcelain paving installation that enhances your outdoor space for years to come.Read More...
