Designing a Sandstone Garden Patio in Ascot

Bring natural beauty and enduring charm to your garden with a classic sandstone patio. Whether you’re going for rustic character or a sleek, modern look, follow these clear steps to create a professional-quality finish that stands the test of time.

1. Design & Plan Your Patio Layout

Mark It Out: Use string lines, wooden pegs, or spray paint to define the shape and size of your patio. Take time to check measurements and ensure symmetry.

Add Design Details: Consider incorporating features like edging stones, curved borders, or steps to enhance both style and practicality.

2. Choose the Right Sandstone Finish

Rustic & Traditional: Riven slabs in warm buffs, sandy tones, or multicolour palettes offer a natural, weathered look—ideal for cottage gardens and classic spaces.

Sleek & Contemporary: Opt for sawn or calibrated sandstone in greys, beiges, or smooth finishes to create a clean, architectural vibe that suits modern gardens.

3. Prepare the Ground

Clear the Area: Remove any grass, weeds, roots, or debris to expose bare soil.

Excavate to the Correct Depth: Dig down approximately 150–200mm (6–8 inches) to accommodate the sub-base and bedding layers.

Plan for Drainage: Ensure a gentle slope of about 1:60 away from the house to prevent water pooling.

4. Build a Solid Foundation

Sub-Base Layer: Spread 50–100mm (2–4 inches) of MOT Type 1 or crushed hardcore, then compact thoroughly with a plate compactor to create a stable base.

Bedding Layer: Apply a 25–50mm (1–2 inch) layer of sharp sand or a full mortar bed (5:1 mix). Level using a screed rail or straight edge.

5. Lay the Sandstone Slabs

Start in a Corner: Begin from one edge and work outwards, laying slabs according to your pattern (random, stretcher bond, etc.).

Tap & Level: Set each slab into place using a rubber mallet. Use a spirit level to ensure it’s even and sits flush with adjacent stones.

Make Clean Cuts: Use a wet saw with a diamond blade for precise cuts around edges, corners, or features.

6. Jointing & Sealing for Long-Term Protection

Fill the Joints: Once the slabs are set and dry, brush kiln-dried sand or apply a specialist jointing compound into the gaps (5–10mm wide is standard).

Seal for Durability: Apply a breathable sandstone sealer to guard against stains, algae, and colour fading. Choose UV-stable formulas for lasting results.

7. Add the Finishing Touches

Style It Your Way: Complete your patio with outdoor furniture, planters, lighting, and decorative accessories to create an inviting, finished space.

Maintain with Ease: Sweep regularly to remove dirt and debris. Reseal every 2–3 years to preserve the look and enhance weather resistance.

The Journey of Sandstone: From Nature to Garden

Sandstone is more than just stone—it's a story written over millennia. Formed by the natural fusion of quartz, minerals, and time, each slab reveals its own character through subtle veining, tonal variation, and earthy texture. No two pieces are ever alike, bringing a truly unique beauty to every outdoor space.

Responsibly Sourced, Expertly Finished
Ethically quarried from trusted sources, large sandstone blocks are precision-cut and hand-finished by skilled craftsmen. This careful process ensures both the visual appeal and long-term strength of each slab—reflecting a commitment to quality, environmental care, and artisan expertise.

A Finish for Every Design Vision
Whether you're after understated elegance or rugged charm, sandstone offers finishes to suit every style:

Honed – Smooth and matte, ideal for minimalist, modern gardens.

Polished – Glossy and refined, perfect for contemporary or formal outdoor settings.

Textured – Tactile and naturally anti-slip, great for patios, paths, and driveways.

Strength That Stands the Test of Time
Built to endure, sandstone performs beautifully through all seasons. Its resistance to frost, wear, and weathering means it matures gracefully—enhancing your landscape for years, even decades, to come.
