How to Install Patterned Porcelain Tiles

Step 1: Measure Your Area Accurately

Begin by measuring the full dimensions of your space, taking into account any patterns, borders, curves, or unique design features you plan to include. To calculate the total square meterage, multiply the longest width by the longest length. For optimal results and to avoid shortfall, we recommend ordering an additional 5% extra material to cover cutting, adjustments, and potential wastage.

Choose your Porcelain Paving based on both style and practical needs—consider size, colour, and technical specs. Ordering is simple on our website: either enter the total square metres you need or add individual tiles directly to your basket.

Step 2: Prepare the Site

Start by marking your patio area clearly with stakes and string or spray paint to outline the layout. Next, excavate the ground to a depth of 150–200mm (6–8 inches) to prepare space for the sub-base, bedding mortar, and paving slabs. Ensure you create a slight slope with a 1:60 gradient to promote effective water drainage away from your property.

Step 3: Create a Solid Sub-Base

Lay a 100–150mm (4–6 inch) layer of MOT Type 1 Limestone or hardcore, then compact it thoroughly with a wacker plate to create a solid, level foundation. This stable base prevents shifting and guarantees long-lasting durability for your patio or paving project.

Step 4: Apply the Bedding Layer

Prepare mortar by mixing sharp sand and cement in a 4:1 ratio. Apply a 30mm (1–1.5 inch) thick layer over the compacted sub-base, maintaining the existing slope for proper drainage. This sturdy mortar bed provides a reliable foundation to securely support your porcelain tiles.

Step 5: Prime the Pavers

Before installing porcelain tiles, apply a slurry primer to the back of each tile to enhance adhesion to the mortar bed. Recommended products for this crucial step include Azpects EASYPrime and Ultrascape Slurry Primer, ensuring a strong, lasting bond.

Step 6:Lay the Porcelain Tiles

Start laying your pavers from a fixed corner or reference point, firmly pressing each tile into the mortar bed. Use Azpects spacers to keep consistent 3–5mm joints between tiles. Regularly check levels with a spirit level and gently tap with a rubber mallet to ensure a perfectly even surface.

Once the mortar has fully set—usually after 24 hours—fill the joints using a high-quality jointing compound such as EASYJoint. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely, especially if water activation is needed, to ensure durable and effective joint sealing.

Final Finishing

Clean the surface with a soft brush and water to remove any remaining jointing compound. Allow the area to cure for 24–48 hours before walking on it or placing heavy furniture.

Ongoing Maintenance

• Routine Cleaning: Sweep regularly and rinse with a garden hose or light pressure washer as needed.

• Gentle Products Only: Avoid abrasive chemicals—use mild detergents to keep your paving and grout in top condition.
