Multi Mix Chippings for your Garden

There are many different uses for Multi Mix Chippings in your garden; with their large array of colours, it also means they match many different colour schemes within your garden while creating a feature that will both catch the eye, as well as create a contrast and give you a low maintenance area in the garden. 

A popular use for Multi Mix Chippings are to create a garden border around the edges of your garden. They really stand out against a main garden feature such as garden Paving, or some Artificial Grass. By using Decorative Chippings as a border, it also gives you something else to look at between your fence panels and your garden.

If you want to simply create a colourful feature, maybe in the middle of your garden or as a rockery feature, Multi Mix would be a great stone to use. If you're also struggling for ideas for your front garden, maybe you have a small area that you don't want to place grass or paving in; you could always fill it with Multi Mix Chippings as a bright entrance to your home that requires very little up-keep. 

The colours of Multi-Mix Chippings are hugely enhanced when wet, so people have often used these garden stones within natural water features. Please be aware that these stones aren't fish-friendly though, so may not be suitable for use in ponds that contain wildlife. 

How to Lay Multi Mix Chippings as a Garden Feature

Creating a garden border or a garden feature out of these colourful, decorative stones is actually a lot easier and cheaper than you might think! If you think your DIY skills are up for the challenge, read on for a basic guide on how to acomplish this.

To avoid the stones subsiding and moving over time, we'd recommend laying a suitable base that will ensure a level and sturdy base layer. For this, use Limestone Type 1, also referred to as MOT Type 1, which is a graded, 40mm Limestone. This has a clay-like consistency that will also act as a cushion under your stones. 

To ensure you buy the right amount of base layer and decorative chippings, you must measure the area that you're looking to cover. You can then use our handy Quantity Calculator to work out how much stone you'll need. We would suggest having a base of 50mm.

Dig out the desired area with a depth between 50mm - 150mm, ensuring this includes 50mm for your MOT Type 1 base and 50mm for your Grey Chippings.

Add your 40mm Limestone Type 1 to your dug-out area and ensure a minimum of 50mm is laid. Not only will this provide a durable base, but it will also aid drainage. 

We have many different weed-prevention options, but the most effective is using a strong Weed Fabric, to eliminate the worry of weeds ruining your feature/driveway; these come in multiple sizes for you to choose from.
