What can Woodland Mulch be used for?

Woodland Mulch for plant borders and beds

As you can see in the photos, the mixture of softwood and hardwood results in a beautiful, natural blend of browns that look great against your garden plants.

As well as looking great, there is a functional reason as to why you’d add Woodland Mulch to your plant bed, and that is because of the nutrients it can add to your soil. During the process of mulching down further, it will improve your soil structure and add organic matter, thus increasing the nutrients in your soil and increasing the chances of brighter and better blooms!

Woodland Mulch for Spring and Summer

Spring makes a popular time to purchase Woodland Mulch, that is because the weather starts getting warmer, leading to soil drying out throughout the day.

With the addition of Woodland Mulch to your plants, it ensures moisture can be retained throughout the day after they have had their morning water, or after we’ve had a rain shower.

As you can imagine, this makes Woodland Mulch invaluable during the hot, summer months where droughts can occur and plants can get dehydrated easily.

Woodland Mulch for Autumn and Winter

Similarly, Woodland Mulch is also a best-selling item during autumn months. Where the temperature starts to drop during the autumn months, Woodland Mulch creates a warm topper for your soil, to ensure it retains warmth, while also protecting from long periods of rainfall.

Furthermore, winter months can mean frost is present which can also damage the roots of your plants. With Woodland Mulch added to your soil, it will prevent frost from reaching the roots of your plants, offering great protection through the whole of the winter!

Woodland Mulch for low maintenance gardens

Have you got an unused area of your garden? Maybe you’re letting it get a little overgrown to encourage wildlife, or maybe you require some low maintenance options. Woodland Mulch could be what you’ve been looking for!

Woodland Mulch makes a great material for ‘joining’ two landscaped sections together; whilst providing great drainage that Paving might not be able to offer. It could also be used to create a natural pathway, although we would recommend Path Chips for this specific application.

If you don’t have the time to upkeep a deck, or a paved patio, Woodland Mulch requires little to no maintenance at all. You only need to top it up once the wood chips are getting low; it will add nutrients to the ground below it and provide a stable, comfortable garden surface to walk on.

How to Install Woodland Mulch

When installing Woodland Mulch to your garden borders, ensure your plants are well-watered, removing any debris from the surface of the soil. Proceed to lay the Woodland Mulch at a 2–3inch depth (5cm) and top up when needed.

If you’d like to install Woodland Mulch onto the ground, you may require scalpings such as MOT Type 1 to ensure you’ll have a stable sub-base that will also aid drainage. Lay your scalpings sub-base at a 5cm depth and ensure the surface is completely level. You could add a layer of Weed Membrane to prevent weeds growing through in the long term. Then lay Woodland Mulch to a minimum of 5cm depth.
