What are Sawn Paving Slabs?

We have a large range of Sawn Sandstone Paving, with Rainbow Paving being one of our best-sellers. These are usually the sawn versions of our most popular natural paving stones. 

As they are still Sandstone slabs, it means they still derive from the same Indian quarries and are cut stones from sedimentary rocks that have been around for thousands of years. 

The sawn range, however, goes through a couple of extra processes to bring out the beautiful colours, and enhance to finish and texture, for a fantastic-looking garden patio. 

Rainbow Paving has been sawn, which means it has been machine cut around the edges for perfectly smooth and regimented lines when laid. They have also been sawn on the top and bottom of the slab, meaning the surface will be smooth as opposed to naturally riven like our other Sandstone and Limestone Paving ranges.

It has also been honed, which is a polishing process that further smooths the top surface, bringing out the natural colours and ensuring it has the look of a perfectly polished stone, which looks particularly impressive when wet. 

There is no benefit when it comes to strength and durability, as this will be the same as the rest of our Sandstone paving range. It simply will look more impressive and be much easier to install in your garden with the perfectly cut, regimented lines.

How to Look After Sawn Sandstone Paving

Similarly to how you'd look after Sandstone or Limestone Paving, we would recommend sealing these paving stones as soon as they are laid. This is because, once these sawn paving slabs have been machine-cut, it opens the pores up to weather exposure that can lead to discolouration and things like mould and fungi getting into the pores. 

The best sandstone sealer we would recommend is the Azpects Easy Seal Enhancer & Sealer, as recommended highly in the landscaping trade.

As well as sealing when laid, you can also expect to do some low-level maintenance such as freeing your garden paving slabs from debris such as fallen leaves and twigs, as well as jet washing it once or twice a year.
