How to Maintain Artificial Grass

1. Keep It Clean

Fortunately, the frequent rainfall we experience in the UK naturally helps to keep artificial grass clean. However, during the drier summer months—when rain is limited and your lawn sees heavier use—it’s a good idea to give it a more thorough rinse with a garden hose. How often you do this will depend on foot traffic, but for most homes, a gentle hose-down every couple of weeks is more than enough.

Regular rinsing helps wash away dust, pollen, dirt, and other airborne debris that settle on the surface. It also supports even distribution of the sand infill, which is essential for maintaining a stable, natural-looking lawn.

For more stubborn dirt or heavily soiled areas, you can use a mild cleaning solution. A 5% mixture of standard household detergent in warm water, applied with a sponge or cloth, works well. After cleaning, simply rinse the area thoroughly with fresh water.

Specialised artificial grass cleaners are also available, though they are optional. While not required for general upkeep, they are completely safe to use and can add an extra boost of cleanliness and fragrance if desired.

2. Removing Pet Urine Smells

To keep your lawn fresh when pets use it regularly:

• Rinse affected spots frequently with clean water to dilute and wash away residue.
• Use an artificial grass cleaner or a mild vinegar solution to help neutralise stubborn odours.
• Apply a pet-safe artificial grass deodoriser for long-lasting freshness.

3. Apply Weedkiller

Artificial grass can occasionally be affected by airborne seeds that land and begin to germinate. To maintain a pristine, weed-free lawn, apply a suitable weed killer across the entire surface twice a year. If any weeds do appear, they tend to be shallow-rooted and can be removed easily by hand or with a soft brush.

Be aware that outdoor mirrors, mirrored walls, shiny surfaces, and some energy-efficient windows can reflect and intensify sunlight, creating heat hot spots that may damage artificial grass. Because of this risk, we strongly recommend avoiding these items near any area where Artificial Grass is installed. Damage caused by reflective heat is not covered under warranty.

Similarly, barbeques, fire pits, chimeneas, and any heat-producing equipment should never be placed directly on the lawn. High temperatures can burn or melt the surface, so always position them on a patio or other fire-safe, hard-standing surface.

We’ve also seen cases where contractors carrying out garden work have placed hot or running motorised tools—such as hedge trimmers or chainsaws—on the artificial grass, resulting in scorch marks. Please ensure any tradespeople working in your garden are made aware of this, as damage caused in these circumstances is not covered under the warranty.

And lastly, keep an eye on reflective toys. Even something as simple as a child’s magnifying glass can concentrate sunlight enough to heat and damage the surface. A little caution will keep your artificial lawn looking perfect for years to come.
