How to Maintain Artificial Grass

1. Keep It Clean

Luckily, here in the UK, we get lots of rain to keep the turf clean but, during the drier summer months when rainfall is limited and your lawn is likely being used more frequently, it can be helpful to give it a more thorough rinse with a garden hose. The ideal frequency will depend on how heavily your lawn is used, but for most households, a light hose-down every couple of weeks is usually sufficient.

Rinsing your artificial grass helps remove dust, pollen, dirt, and other airborne particles that can settle on the surface. It also assists in keeping the sand infill evenly distributed, which is important for maintaining a stable and natural-looking lawn.

If your artificial grass becomes heavily soiled, you can use a mild cleaning solution. We recommend applying a 5% mix of household detergent in warm water using a sponge or cloth to gently clean the affected area, followed by a thorough rinse with a hose.

While specialised artificial grass cleaning products are available on the market, they are optional rather than essential. That said, they are fully safe to use and can provide an additional level of freshness if desired.

2. Removing Pet Urine Smells

Rinse the affected areas frequently with clean water to dilute and wash away residue.

Use an artificial grass cleaner or a mild vinegar solution to help neutralise any lingering odours.

For added freshness, apply a pet-safe artificial grass deodoriser as needed.

Always ensure your lawn has adequate drainage so urine cannot accumulate or pool beneath the surface.

3. Apply Weedkiller

Artificial grass can sometimes be affected by airborne seeds that settle on the surface and begin to germinate. To keep your lawn looking pristine, it’s important to apply a suitable weed killer across the entire area twice a year. This routine treatment helps prevent unwanted growth and maintains the clean, low-maintenance appeal of your grass.

If any weeds do manage to sprout, they are usually superficial and can be removed quickly and easily by hand or with a gentle brush, ensuring your lawn stays neat and tidy all year round.

FYI: This can be slightly mitigated if you apply a layer of Weed Membrane below the Artificial Grass layers for extra protection.

4. Avoid certain products

Please note that outdoor mirrors, mirrored panels, highly reflective surfaces, and certain energy-efficient windows can concentrate sunlight and cause heat damage to artificial grass. For this reason, we strongly advise against using these items in any area where Artificial Grass is installed, as any resulting damage will not be covered under our warranty.

Similarly, barbeques and other heat-generating equipment should never be placed directly on the artificial lawn, as the intense heat can scorch or melt the surface. To avoid accidental damage, always position BBQs on a patio or a designated hard-standing area.

We have also encountered instances where contractors trimming trees or hedges have placed motorised tools on the lawn, leading to burns on the surface. Please ensure that any tradespeople working on your property are informed in advance to avoid placing hot or running equipment on the turf. Damage caused in these circumstances is not covered by the warranty.

And finally—keep an eye on the kids’ toys. Even something as simple as a magnifying glass can focus sunlight and create enough heat to harm the lawn. A little caution goes a long way in keeping your Artificial Grass looking its best.
