Our Wessex® Premium Subsoil is expertly formulated with a blend of carefully selected inert subsoil sands and quarried subsoil, creating a high-quality sandy loam subsoil. This blend ensures excellent drainage, nutrient density, and reliable performance for a variety of landscaping needs.

This subsoil is screened to 10mm, fully tested, and meets the BS8601 standards for quality and consistency.

What is BS8601?

This British Standard establishes guidelines for subsoils that are moved or sold with the intention of creating soil profiles capable of supporting plant growth. It does not apply to subsoils in their natural, undisturbed state. The standard defines two categories of subsoil:

Multipurpose Subsoil: A versatile subsoil suitable for most applications where subsoil is necessary.

Specific Purpose Subsoil: This subsoil category includes types tailored for specialized needs, such as supporting specific plant communities. It is further divided into acidic or calcareous subsoils, depending on the required soil characteristics for specialized growth conditions.

This standard represents the first official British Standard specifically for subsoils, underscoring the critical role of subsoil layers in overall soil profiles that support robust plant life.

Low Organic Matter (0.8%): With a controlled organic matter content of 0.8%, it is suitable for use as a foundational soil layer. This low organic content provides stability and is ideal for projects where excessive organic material could impact plant growth or drainage.

Slightly Acidic pH (6.2): Featuring a slightly acidic pH of 6.2, this subsoil supports a wide range of plants, including acid-loving species, and works well as a base layer when creating a balanced soil profile.

Minimal Contamination Risk: Carefully sourced and screened to reduce contamination risks, ensuring it is safe for landscaping and planting projects without harmful elements that could impact plant health.

This multipurpose subsoil is ideal for foundational applications, providing a stable, low-organic base for plant beds, lawns, and landscaping areas, while supporting moderate drainage and pH balance.
