What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone?
Both porcelain and sandstone paving offer unique benefits, catering to different design aesthetics and functional needs in landscape design. Here’s a closer look at what sets them apart:
Porcelain Paving: Modern Performance with Timeless Appeal
Crafted through a high-temperature process called vitrification, porcelain paving is made from refined clays and minerals like quartz, then fired at around 1200°C. This creates an ultra-dense, non-porous surface that’s:
Waterproof and frost-resistant
Highly durable and hard-wearing
Low maintenance, with no sealing required
R11 slip-rated, making it ideal for wet zones like pool areas or family patios
With its sleek, refined finish and consistent colour tones, porcelain is perfect for modern landscapes where performance and style go hand in hand. It resists stains, moss, and mould, maintaining its crisp look with minimal upkeep.
Sandstone Paving: Natural Beauty with Rustic Character
Sandstone is a quarried natural stone—most commonly sourced from India—prized for its organic texture and warm, earthy tones. Each slab is inherently unique, offering:
Natural variation in colour and grain
A traditional look, ideal for rustic gardens or heritage properties
Permeability, which supports natural drainage and reduces runoff
As a porous stone, sandstone does require more care: regular sealing helps preserve its colour and protect it from staining. Over time, it weathers beautifully, developing a patina that adds to its charm.
Choosing the Right One
Choose Porcelain if you want a modern, low-maintenance, and high-performance paving solution.
Choose Sandstone if you value natural charm, eco-conscious drainage, and a more traditional aesthetic.
Both materials offer long-lasting value and beauty—your ideal choice depends on your style, lifestyle, and how much maintenance you're willing to take on.
How to Install Sienna™ Sahara Beige Tiles
Installing porcelain paving requires careful preparation and attention to detail to achieve a durable, attractive finish. Follow this comprehensive guide to ensure a successful, long-lasting result.
1. Planning & Design
Measure the Area
Start by measuring the space you plan to pave, including any features such as borders, steps, or patterns.
Select Your Paving
Choose porcelain tiles that suit both your design vision and practical needs—consider size, thickness, colour, and surface texture.
2. Site Preparation
Mark the Layout
Use string lines and stakes to outline the area. Ensure corners are square and lines are straight to guide an even layout.
Excavate the Ground
Dig down 150–200mm (6–8 inches) to accommodate the sub-base, mortar bed, and tiles. Maintain a gentle slope (typically 1:60) away from buildings to aid drainage.
3. Creating the Sub-Base
Add MOT Type 1
Spread a 100–150mm (4–6 inches) layer of MOT Type 1 hardcore or crushed stone.
Compact Thoroughly
Use a vibrating plate compactor to compact the sub-base evenly and create a solid foundation.
4. Preparing the Mortar Bed
Mix Mortar
Blend sharp sand and cement in a 4:1 ratio to form a semi-dry mix.
Lay the Mortar
Apply a 30mm (1–1.5 inches) thick mortar bed over the sub-base. Ensure it follows your planned fall for proper water runoff.
5. Priming the Tiles
Apply a Slurry Primer
Coat the back of each porcelain slab with a slurry primer (e.g., Azpects EASYPrime) before laying. This step is crucial to ensure strong adhesion to the mortar bed.
6. Laying the Paving
Start in a Corner
Begin at a fixed corner and lay tiles outward from that point.
Use Spacers
Insert 3–5mm spacers between tiles to maintain consistent joint widths.
Check for Level
Tap each tile gently into place using a rubber mallet. Use a spirit level to ensure a flat, even surface.
7. Cutting the Tiles
Use Proper Tools
Cut tiles with a wet tile saw fitted with a diamond blade to ensure clean, accurate edges. Always wear safety goggles and gloves during cutting.
8. Jointing the Paving
Let Mortar Set
Allow the mortar to cure for at least 24 hours before jointing.
Apply Jointing Compound
Use a suitable porcelain jointing product (e.g., EASYJoint), following the manufacturer’s directions.
Activate with Water
Lightly spray with water if required to activate and set the compound.
9. Final Touches
Clean the Surface
Use a soft brush and clean water to remove excess compound from the surface before it hardens.
Allow to Cure
Let the entire area cure for 24–48 hours before using it or placing furniture.
10. Optional: Seal the Joints
While porcelain itself does not need sealing, sealing the joints can help protect against stains and enhance longevity. Only apply sealant once the jointing compound has fully cured.
Ongoing Maintenance Tips
Routine Cleaning: Sweep regularly and rinse with a hose or light pressure washer.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Use mild detergents to protect the paving’s finish and joint integrity.
