Things to do in Notting Hill

Things to do in Notting Hill

Tucked away in west London, Notting Hill is one of the capital’s most sought-after and Instagram-worthy neighbourhoods. Its pastel-coloured houses, vibrant market, and eclectic culture make it a favourite with both locals and visitors.

In the 1960s and '70s, Notting Hill was the epitome of cool—a scrappy west London enclave where creatives, outsiders, and those priced out of Chelsea or Kensington came to make a home. It was cheap, raw, and bursting with energy. This was the birthplace of the now-iconic Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest street festival—a fiery celebration of multiculturalism with music, food, and flair. The area had a shabby-chic charm: late-night speakeasies, market stalls selling records, fruit, Afghan coats, questionable antiques on Portobello Road, and the occasional illicit deal along All Saints Road—then lined with patrolling bobbies, not luxury bathroom boutiques.

Today, Notting Hill is polished and high-end, dotted with designer shops, boutique cafes, and affluent residents. But beyond the bankers and tourists snapping selfies by that blue door, the spirit of the old Notting Hill still lingers. You just have to know where to look.

Getting to Notting Hill

Notting Hill Gate is the main Tube station, served by the Central, District, and Circle lines. You can also travel to Westbourne Park or Ladbroke Grove stations on the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines, then walk along the iconic Portobello Road.

Several London bus routes serve Notting Hill Gate and Ladbroke Grove. Download a free London travel map and plan ahead to make the most of your journey.

Notting Hill Carnival

Every August bank holiday, more than a million people take to the streets for Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest street festival. This Caribbean-themed celebration fills the neighbourhood with colourful costumes, steel pan and calypso music, lively parades, and delicious street food.

Plan your visit in advance—some Tube stations operate exit-only or close entirely during the weekend. Check the carnival route, nearby amenities, and weather forecast before heading out. Sunscreen, sunglasses, an umbrella, and water are recommended.

Portobello Road Market

Running nearly a kilometre through the heart of Notting Hill, Portobello Road Market is one of London’s best-loved shopping destinations. While open most weekdays, Saturday is the main event—especially for antiques lovers and vintage treasure hunters.

Expect to find everything from fresh produce and handmade goods to unique fashion and curios. Dive into the market and take home a one-of-a-kind souvenir.

Notting Hill on Screen

The 1999 film Notting Hill, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, turned the area into a cinematic icon. You can walk in the footsteps of the stars on a Notting Hill Film Tour, which visits famous filming locations while sharing stories about the area's past.
