Things to do in Lulworth

Both East Lulworth and West Lulworth are charming, historic villages worth exploring over several days. While their beaches are pebbled rather than sandy, they rank among the most beautiful in Dorset. Visitors from across the globe come here to admire the dramatic landscapes, take in the coastal views, and swim in the crystal-clear waters.
Famous Highlights
Lulworth Cove
Nestled in West Lulworth, Lulworth Cove is instantly recognisable for its perfectly rounded bay and breathtaking scenery. It’s one of Dorset’s most visited and loved coastal spots. Spend the day exploring gift shops, or enjoy fresh local seafood at one of the village pubs and cafes, many with gorgeous sea views.
If you’re after something more casual, grab traditional fish and chips to enjoy on the beach, followed by a scoop (or two) of locally made ice cream.
From the Cove, a short stroll along the South West Coast Path takes you to the stunning Man O’ War beach and the iconic stone arch of Durdle Door. Heading the other way, you can follow the path towards Kimmeridge and the fascinating deserted Tyneham Village via the Lulworth Ranges.
To learn more about the area’s unique geology, stop by the Lulworth Heritage Centre for engaging displays, animations, and films covering the stories of the Cove, Stairhole, the Lulworth Crumple, and Durdle Door.
West Lulworth Village
As the closest village to Lulworth Cove, West Lulworth is a magnet for visitors, thanks to its unspoilt beaches, scenic walks, and world-famous coastal views. It’s a dream location for geology enthusiasts and keen photographers.
From the village, you can take part in a variety of outdoor adventures including kayaking, coasteering, mountain biking, and guided walks. Nearby, horse riding is available through picturesque heathlands and woodlands.
West Lulworth’s charm extends beyond the coastline – look out for the pretty mill pond, once part of a working watermill, and the quaint Dolls House building (now a cafe and shop), which once squeezed in a family of 11!
Lulworth Castle & Park
Located in East Lulworth, Lulworth Castle and its surrounding parkland are must-sees. Once a garrison for Roundhead soldiers and later a refuge for the French royal family, the Castle was badly damaged by fire in 1929 but has since been partially restored to welcome visitors.
Explore its beautiful grounds, woodlands, and historic chapel, enjoy a picnic, or let the children run wild in the adventure playground. While the Castle itself is sometimes closed for weddings, the park remains open for all to enjoy.
East Lulworth is also known for its picture-perfect thatched cottages, a welcoming village pub, and a delightful gift and coffee shop in the old schoolhouse.
If you want to make the most of the scenery, leave the car behind and cycle from Wareham along the East Lulworth Ride – a route filled with fresh air and spectacular views.
