Guide to Applying Top-Dressing
Guide to Applying Top-Dressing
Top Dressing is a simple yet effective way to revive a tired, uneven, or patchy lawn. By spreading a thin layer of nutrient-rich dressing over the surface, you create the perfect conditions for strong, healthy grass growth and help new seed establish more easily.
A quality lawn Top Dressing mix typically contains sandy loam or free-draining topsoil, combined with sand and well-rotted organic matter. You can either make your own mix or purchase a ready-to-use lawn dressing for convenience.
While the process can be labour-intensive — as the material is quite heavy and needs to be evenly spread — it’s an excellent way to rejuvenate your lawn when it starts to look uneven or thin. For most gardens, Top Dressing is best done occasionally as part of seasonal lawn renovation, rather than an annual routine.

Why is Top-Dressing Needed?
Top Dressing not only enhances the appearance of your lawn but also boosts its overall health. By filling in small dips and uneven areas, it creates a smooth, level surface that makes sowing new grass easier and results in a more attractive, even lawn. It also helps break down thatch layers naturally, preventing excessive build-up and promoting stronger grass growth.
For lawns prone to waterlogging, applying a sand-based Top Dressing after aeration can greatly improve drainage. Conversely, a loam-based Top Dressing helps the soil retain moisture, offering better protection against drought conditions.
Step-By-Step Guide To Top-dressing Your Lawn
1. Prepare Your Lawn for Top Dressing
Start by getting your lawn ready so the dressing can properly penetrate the soil and deliver the best results.
Here’s how to prepare:
Mow: Cut the grass as short as possible to make it easier to work on the surface.
Aerate and scarify (optional): While not essential, aerating and scarifying your lawn is highly recommended. This removes built-up thatch and creates small holes that help the dressing filter through, improving drainage and soil health.
Clean up: Before applying the dressing, rake away any loose debris, moss, or grass clippings to leave a clear surface.
Please note, you can apply grass seed either before or after Top Dressing, but it’s usually best to seed after. If you’re using a very light dressing, seeding beforehand is also possible. Always follow the instructions on your grass seed packet for sowing. Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and avoid mowing until the new grass reaches at least 5 cm in height.
2. Prepare the Top Dressing Mix
When you purchase our Wessex® 10mm Top Dressing, all the mixing and prep work is done for you. All you need to do is apply it to your lawn!
3. Apply the Dressing to the Lawn
Spread the mixture evenly across the lawn. For small gardens, a shovel will suffice. Larger areas may require a top-dresser, which can often be rented from machinery suppliers.
Apply a thin layer, just enough to enrich the soil. A good rule of thumb is 1 m³ of dressing per 100 m². For perspective, a 50-litre bag of sand will cover roughly 5–10 m², depending on your sand-to-compost ratio.
Don’t worry if the dressing forms small piles at first—that’s normal and will be levelled in the next step.
4. Level the Dressing
Use a rake to spread the material evenly across the lawn. For mechanical top-dressers, this step may not be necessary.
Finish by smoothing the surface with a metal mat to ensure the dressing penetrates all low spots and prevents uneven areas.
5. Water the Lawn
Give the lawn a deep watering to help the dressing settle into the soil.
In a few days, you’ll notice the grass recovering, growing healthier, and filling in any bare patches.
Frequently Asked Questions About Top Dressing
How often should I top-dress my lawn?
How often you top-dress your lawn depends on your soil quality, but it’s generally recommended to do it at least once a year. Even lawns with poor or compacted soil can benefit from annual Top Dressing to maintain a healthy, level surface.
When should I top-dress my lawn?
The best time to top-dress lawns is during periods of active grass growth, which in the UK is typically between April and October. Traditionally, Top Dressing is carried out in late spring or early autumn to align with the main seasonal lawn renovation programs.
What is overseeding?
Overseeding is the process of adding new grass seed to thicken an existing lawn. It pairs perfectly with top-dressing, as the dressing creates an ideal environment for the seeds to take root.
After spreading the seed evenly over the lawn, lightly rake it in to help it reach the root zone. If there’s no rainfall within a day or two, water the lawn gently and keep the soil consistently moist until the seed germinates for a healthy, lush lawn.
