In our Wessex® range, sustainability isn’t just a value—it’s embedded in every step of our process. Our Fruit & Veg Topsoil is thoughtfully produced to reduce waste and minimise environmental impact from start to finish.

Rather than extracting virgin soil or disturbing natural habitats, we source recycled soils from landscapers and gardeners across Dorset—materials that would otherwise go to landfill. These are repurposed into a premium growing medium that’s both high-quality and eco-friendly.

Each batch is carefully screened at our Dorset facility, removing stones, sticks, and debris to ensure a clean, fine texture ideal for growing fruit and vegetables. The soil then undergoes rigorous testing for pH, particle size, and temperature. Only when it meets strict quality standards does it receive BS 3882 certification.

Our organic compost is equally sustainable, made from locally sourced green waste—including garden trimmings and tree cuttings from public spaces. This material is shredded and windrow composted over 12 weeks to ensure even decomposition and full nutrient availability. Once it achieves PAS 100 Green Compost standards, it’s blended with the screened soil using precision machinery for a consistent, high-performing mix.

All production stages—from sourcing and processing to testing and blending—are carried out at our Dorset site, which also houses our Stone Zone warehouse. This fully localised approach dramatically cuts emissions from transport and logistics, making Wessex® Fruit & Veg Topsoil one of the most sustainable growing solutions available.

Screening removes large debris like stones, clumps, and even glass—materials that can be both hazardous and disruptive when working by hand or laying turf. By removing these elements, we provide a soil that's not only high-performing but also safe and easy to handle.

How It Works
We use an advanced Soil Screener, also known as a Scalping Screen—think of it as a large, industrial-strength sieve:

Soil is conveyed across a mesh screen with various hole sizes.

For products like our Wessex® Loam Topsoil, we use a 10mm screen to filter out any material larger than that.

The result is a fine, uniform soil that’s free of large debris and ready for immediate application.

Once screened, the soil is clean, even-textured, and perfect for a wide range of planting and landscaping needs. It’s delivered straight to our warehouse, maintaining consistent quality from production to purchase.

What is PAS 100 Green Compost?

Our peat-free green compost is made entirely from recycled green waste, which is carefully mulched and composted using controlled windrow turning methods. To guarantee quality and performance, every batch undergoes a thorough testing and validation process.

This compost is fully PAS 100 certified—the leading standard for compost quality in the UK organics recycling industry. Developed by the British Standards Institution, PAS 100 sets strict requirements for production, traceability, and contamination control, ensuring a product that is clean, consistent, and reliable.

Made exclusively from biodegradable, non-hazardous materials, our compost is 100% safe for use in domestic gardens, allotments, and large-scale landscaping projects—making it a smart, sustainable alternative to peat-based products.

What does BS3882 mean?
