What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone Paving?

At Stone Zone, we sell two different types of Paving in terms of the material they consist of. There is our Natural Stone Paving range which includes Sandstone Paving, Limestone Paving and Slate & Granite Paving. Then we have our huge range of Porcelain Paving garden stones. 

Porcelain Paving is a manufactured stone designed to replicate the look of natural stone paving, while offering enhanced performance and durability.

This Porcelain Paving is manufactured to a high standard through a vitrification process. Vitrification involves firing a blend of high-quality pure clays and minerals, such as quartz, at temperatures of around 1200°C. This results in exceptional durability and minimal water absorption.

Vitrified porcelain is completely non-porous and waterproof, making it highly resistant to mould, moss, and frost. It also retains its R11 slip rating, ensuring a non-slip surface that’s safe for use around pools and other wet areas.. 

Sandstone Paving and Limestone Paving, one the other hand, is a completely natural stone derived from quarries in India. This stone will be naturally porous and let water through the slabs. This makes it great for large areas of gardens with poor drainage, as it will absorb rain water, preventing the cause of floods. 

Natural Stone Paving will require regular sealing to prevent the colours from fading in the sun, but the shade will still naturally change over time. Porcelain Paving, on the other hand, needs very little maintenance, it will stand the test of time in terms of it's looks and will not change in colour or require sealing.
