What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone?
Porcelain and Sandstone Paving are two vastly different types of paving stones.
Porcelain Paving is a man-made stone that has been created to replicate natural stone paving, with some exceptional qualities compared to natural stone paving.
This particular Porcelain Paving has been manufactured been vitrified, making it of the highest quality. Vitrifying means the paving slabs are made from high-quality pure clays and minerals such as Quartz, fired at 1200 degrees Celsius, ensuring high durability and very little absorption. This process has led to Porcelain Paving often being referred to as 'glass like'.
Vitrified Porcelain means the paving will be entirely non-porous and waterproof as well as resistant to mould, moss and frost. It also maintains its R11 skid value, being non-slip and safe for pool surrounds.
On the other hand, Sandstone is a naturally formed stone that is developed in stone quarries in India. Sandstone paving slabs are naturally very porous and therefore is able to let water pass through them.
It can be said that being porous makes Sandstone paving a slightly more eco-friendly option, as it will absorb rainwater, which then will hopefully lead to flood prevention.
But, please be aware that Porcelain Paving needs very little maintenance, the texture will not wear away and it will not discolour no matter how much time passes.
Whereas Sandstone will require a little upkeeping, namely, you will need to regularly seal the paving to prevent the colours from fading completely. However, over time as time goes on, the paving colours will naturally change to lighter shades that also look classic and vintage.
