What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone?
Porcelain and Sandstone Paving are paving slabs of varying qualities.
Porcelain Paving is a manufactured stone that has been created to simulate natural stone paving, with some stand-out qualities compared to natural stone paving.
This manmade Porcelain Paving has been vitrified, ensuring their top quality. Vitrifying means the paving slabs are developed from high-quality pure clays and minerals such as Quartz, heated to 1200 degrees Celsius, ensuring high durability and very little absorption. This process has resulted in Porcelain Paving often being referred to as 'glass like'.
Vitrified Porcelain means the paving will not be porous and be waterproof as well as mould, moss and frost resistant. It also maintains its R11 skid value, being non-slip and safe for pool-sides and areas with children.
Contrarily, Sandstone is derived naturally stone that is developed in Indian Stone quarries. Sandstone paving slabs are porous in nature and which enables them to allow water to pass through.
It can be assumed that being because Sandstone Paving is porous, it is a more environmentally conscious choice because it is able to absorb rain water, which in turn will hopefully aid with flood prevention.
However, keep in mind that Porcelain Paving does not require much upkeeping, the surface texture will not deteriorate and the colour will not face no matter how much time goes by.
Whereas Sandstone will require a little preservation, notably, you will need to seal the paving on a regular basis to prevent the colours from fading away. However, gradually as time passes, the colouring will naturally lighten to paler shades that will give the paving a more aged and time-honoured look.
