Type 3 Limestone
We are proud to be one of the most loved Builder's Merchants in the country and at the Stone Zone, we are pleased to offer an extensive collection of Trade range products; a range that we are constantly adding to since our establishment in 1998. Our Type 3 Limestone is part of this top-quality, great-value range for both Landscapers and Builders.
Builders and Landscapers also refer to Type 3 Limestone as MOT Type 3; this material is widely used across Landscaping and Building projects due to its versatility. Landscapers very often choose to use MOT Type 3 for areas that have heavy footfall, such as driveway sub-bases and sub-bases for garden paving. With the same principle, builders tend to use Type 3 for building foundations and road surfaces - areas that are dependent on being durable and long-lasting.
Developed naturally from stones in the Midlands, these Type 3 Aggregates are quarried in Mendip Hills and then transported to our Dorset Distribution Centre. However, before the Limestone is transported to us, they are first carefully tested and certified which determines that they are safe for commercial use. Only once those tests are done do they reach our depots.
This MOT Type 3 Limestone is graded at 40mm to dust and screened to remove any unwanted pieces of debris.
MOT Type 3 for Landscaping
MOT Type 3, in our opinion, is the most appropriate material to use for both soft and hard landscaping.
The MOT Type 3 is most commonly used for laying below garden paving, be it sandstone or porcelain. We think it's best practice to install a secure and porous sub-base below the garden paving because this allows water to drain through Natural Stone Paving smoothly, which in turn aids in flood prevention.
If you are planning to install a driveway for your home, decked out with Decorative Stones or Shingle, you will require an appropriate sub-base for the stones to be laid on. We suggest that you lay your sub-base 50mm deep because that will ensure there is minimal movement and budging when you walk or drive across the area.
MOT Type 3 for Building
As we have mentioned earlier, MOT Type 3 is can be used for developing sub-bases for commercial buildings, roads and pathways.
The MOT Type 3 share similar qualities to Crushed Concrete and Aquaflow Aggregates as all these materials are labelled permeable. With flash floods occurring more and more frequently, and the risk of standing water, architects and builders have been asked to use products that are as permeable as possible in as many places as possible. This means that when there is heavy rainfall, the water will be absorbed and then over time flow to the ground.
Limestone by nature is long-lasting and strong, yet still considered a soft stone. Landscapers and builders prefer using Type 3 because it is the perfect product for filling in gaps within building foundations and sub-bases. The Limestone is particularly effective when mixed with 40mm Scalpings because the scalpings help compact the aggregates together to make the sub-base stronger.
