Anthracite Porcelain Cobble Setts
More and more homeowners have taken to choosing Porcelain Paving across the country due to its sleek and modern look. Taking that into account, it is not a shock to see that the popularity of Porcelain Cobble Setts has also increased.
The Porcelain Cobble Setts that we stock here at Stone Zone has been developed specifically to suit our Porcelain Paving seamlessly. These edging tiles are versatile and look good with a large range of soft and hard landscaping such as Paving, Artificial Grass and Fresh Turf.
The Anthracite Porcelain Cobble Setts are one of our most popular colours, they are a light-mid grey shade with faint drops of white spotted throughout. These tiles are an excellent option for using around black, grey or even white paving slabs.
Anthracite Porcelain Cobble Setts as a Garden Border
A common garden design that can be achieved with the Anthracite Porcelain Cobble Setts, as we have already mentioned above, is to create a border around your patio or lawn, this is applicable in both front and back gardens and is an important step for making your garden look as put-together as possible.
A large majority of our customers decide to purchase paving slabs to design a garden patio that they can use all year long. Garden patios are an excellent area for sunbathing, BBQs, Al Fresco Dining and more. Your garden patio will look more professional and cohesive with the addition of the cobbles, and the fact that they will complement your garden slabs adds an extra special touch.
Furthermore, you can some extra colours and textures to the area surrounding your turfed/grass area by giving it a border. It is an easy and subtle way to create a division between the soft and hard landscape areas within your garden. Your garden will be tidy and segmented to create an enhanced and cohesive look.
Anthracite Porcelain Cobble Setts as a Garden Patio
If you have a smaller garden and less space to work with, it would be more efficient to have a small area this is paved with Anthracite Porcelain Cobble Setts as a part of the hard landscaping within the garden. As a result of the smaller size of the garden, you will be able to create unique and innovative paved areas that will transform the look and vibe of your garden.
Another garden design idea would be to use the cobble sett to pave a pathway. It has been popular amongst many customers to use the Anthracite Setts to create a whimsical and cottage-like pathway leading to their front door or going across your grass area in the back garden.
Please remember that although our Cobble Setts are a great addition to the front garden for decoration, however, they are not suitable for a driveway. This is because the depth of the cobble setts is only 20mm therefore not enough to be driven on. That being said, if you are looking to pave your driveway, you may want to consider Block Paving, which measures 50mm deep.

How to Lay Cobble Setts
We think it's best to leave professional Landscapers and Builders to do their thing when it comes to installing Porcelain Cobble Setts, solely because they have more experience in handling the tools and materials involved. However, if you have prior DIY experience and know your way around landscaping materials then maybe you can take on this project on your own!
As one of the largest and most loved Buildings Merchants in the South, we can provide a large majority of the materials and equipment you will require for installing the Porcelain Cobble Setts. There are, however, some equipment we do not supply and your best chance would be to hire them - namely the Wacker Plate.
To start, you should measure the area where you will place the Cobble Setts. Depending on whether you are laying them in straight lines like a border or designing a garden patio, you need to make sure that the measurements are as accurate as possible so you can have the correct amount of Cobbles Setts you will need. Once you know where the Setts will go, mark out the area with string or paint so you don't lose the placing.
You will need to dig out the designated area up to 200mm at minimum. Be careful when clearing away any dirt or vegetation, leaving you with a clear surface to lay. Get your hands on a Spirit Level, this would be a good time to use it to make sure the surface is level.
After the paved area has been dug properly and is as level as possible, we suggest that you add a 100mm layer of MOT Type 1. Begin with laying out 50mm which you will need to push in using a compacting plate. Once that is done pour out the remainder of Type 1 and follow the same process until its all smooth.
Once the sub-base has been laid properly, you can proceed to develop the mortar mix. This is a fairly easy step because all you need to do is emulsify 3 parts, Sand, 1 part Cement and 1 part water. Mix these materials until they resemble a slurry that you can work with and easily lay the Cobble Setts on.
Pour out the mortar mix into a thick layer on top of the MOT sub-base. Make sure you spread it at an angle to the mortar mic so that the edging stones can also be installed at an angle. This will make sure that water can pour down smoothly.
You can go ahead and start installing the Cobble Setts. A Rubber Mallet will be handy here so you can use it to tap the stones into place. Remember to leave a gap ranging from 8-15mm between the stones.
Once that is complete, you need to join the Cobble Setts. We have a few options you can choose from. The first option is to use the highly popular Azpects Easy Joint which can be used with Porcelain tiles, but the Easy Joint Select range has been specifically designed for Porcelain. The 2nd option is to use VillaFix Porcelain Grout which is a newer product that is a more cost-effective option.
If either of those options is not for you, you can always create your own by making extra mortar mix and using that to join the setts together. However, this will only give you one colour option, whereas you will have a choice of colours with Easy Joint and Villafix.
