20mm Shingle for Driveways
20mm Shingle is the ideal sized stone for use on your driveway. Most customers that purchase Shingle 20mm will be either topping up their current shingled driveway or converting their current driveway.
Shingle is popular for use on a driveway as the angular stones lock together well to create a stable base for you to leave your car parked on.
Using Shingle for your driveway is also a very affordable drive option as opposed to Block Paving or Decorative Chippings. It also aids drainage better than alternative methods like paving, so there is no worry of standing water or floods.
Not only does Shingle look really nice at the front of your house due to the array of colours, but it's also very low maintenance. The only upkeep required is occasionally topping it up to ensure there is sufficient depth for your car to safely park on.

How to Lay a Shingle Driveway
Installing a driveway that consists of 20mm Shingle is a fairly easy task that can be completed by a motivated, experienced DIYer! If you're up for the challenge, read our how-to guide below.
Any stable driveway will need a suitable base; for this, we recommend using Limestone Type 1, also referred to as MOT Type 1, which is a graded, 40mm Limestone.
Measure your driveway space that you'd like to contain the Shingle, you can then use our Quantity Calculator to work out how much Type 1 you'll need. We would suggest having a base of 50mm.
Dig out the desired area with a depth between 50mm - 150mm, ensuring this includes 50mm for your MOT Type 1 base and 50mm for your Shingle.
You can add an optional Grid Stabiliser, which is best for large areas that will have heavy traffic driving over it fairly often. These are particularly good for long drives or private roads.
Add your 40mm Limestone Type 1 to your dug-out area and ensure a minimum of 50mm is laid. Not only will this provide a durable base, but it will also aid drainage.
We recommend installing a layer of Weed Fabric to ensure pesky weeds don't start coming through the fabric; these come in multiple sizes for you to choose from.
Once the fabric has been laid, you can start putting your 20mm Shingle down! Remember to add this to at least a 50mm depth.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally-sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour.
