Spring is just around the corner, meaning warmer weather, longer days and that urge to plant a new variety of flowers or maybe some fruit or veg! This article goes through the range of soils, mulches and compost to help you decide which is best for you.

Rolawn Beds & Borders Topsoil

Best Quality, Flower Planting Soil

This is the ultimate soil for all your planting requirements, from flowers to shrubs, this soil will give your plants the best start due to its organic-rich composition.

Rolawn Beds & Borders Topsoil is a peat-free, organic rich, light and friable blended topsoil with added controlled release fertiliser, which will feed plants for longer, giving better plant health and reduced plant loss. Also suitable for planters and pots.

The controlled release fertiliser provides balanced fertility to promote healthy establishment of shrubs, trees, plants and flowers, resulting in improved growth rate and enhanced root development.

Rolawn Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil

Professional Standard Fruit & Vegetable Soil

Rolawn Vegetable & Fruit Topsoil is the best-in-class medium for growing all types of fruits and vegetables in any planting format. It is easy to work and barrow, even when wet, making it perfect for filling raised beds and planters. you can also add this to existing an vegetable patch or fruit bed to enhance the soil.

This is a slightly heavier, fertile topsoil which is blended with additional organic matter to ensure consistent growing results. It does not contain manures which can be variable and, in some instances, potentially harmful. It is tested in accordance with the revised British Standard, which includes suitability for growing edible crops.

Hallstone Topsoil

Mid-Range, All-Purpose Soil

Rolawn's value brand includs Hallstone - a great choice for basic gardening and landscaping. Hallstone Topsoil is blended using natural topsoil and compost material produced to BSI PAS100:2018, analysed to the British Standard BS3882:2015 as suitable for residential home grown use.

This soil is screened to 20mm particles. It is consistent and peat free; high in quality but excellent value at just £75.35 per bulk bag, which contains 0.63 (600 litres) of soil.

Rolawn Soil Improver Compost

Best Quality Soil Enhancer for Existing Plants

If your soil is old and not seeing the growing results you'd like, Rolawn Soil Improver Compost is the answer. It will drastically improve your soil's structure; enhancing its drainage characteristics by improving moisture retention in sandy and chalky soils. It also improves nutrient retention and soil fertility, all of which will result in healthier plant growth.

This soil improver is a natural, peat free soil conditioner/improver made from composted organic matter. It is highly fertile and will improve the structure of clay, sandy or chalky soils by increasing the organic matter content. Friable and light, this soil is easy to barrow, spread and work into the soil and can be used as a multi-purpose compost for containers and potting on. Note: Not suitable for use as seed sowing compost.

Woodland Mulch

All-Round Plant Protector

Very popular in the Summer and Winter months is our best-selling Woodland Mulch, usually purchased as an addition to protect your plants. This is perfect for flower beds; supressing weed growth as well as keeping the soil cool, and retaining moisture in the Summer and retaining warmth through the Winter.

Woodland Mulch consists of finely shredded tree waste, a blend of soft and hardwood. It has a neutral PH of 6.3 - 7.5 and is substantially free of physical contaminants, viable weed seeds and pathogens.

Technical information:

  • Bulk Density: 250g – 350g/litre
  • Moisture Content: 42.4% m/m 119g/litre
  • Dry Matter: 57.6% m/m 161g/litre
  • Organic Matter: (as loss on ignition) 54.8% of the dry matter
  • Carbon: Nitrogen Ratio: 72.6:1
  • pH: 6.3-7.5
  • Electrical Conductivity: 250 μS/cm.

Wessex® BS3882 10mm Soil

Best Value, All-Purpose Soil

And last but by no means least, our own brand Wessex® soil, which is suitable for all general landscaping uses including turf laying and plant seeding. 

This is a 80/20 blend of high quality, local, British Standard topsoil and PAS 100 green compost. Our Wessex soil is tested in accordance to a BS3882: 2015 – A copy of our test analysis is available on request. The PH for this is between 7.5-8.5 and is not treated with any additives.

This soil is screened to 10mm down, available in bulk bags which contain approximately 850kg or loose tonnes which contain approximately 1m3.
